The Rhubarb Triangle in Yorkshire is none other than 'the forced rhubarb centre of the world,' and it was there where William Green (Aggborough) captured the set of field recordings which formed the backbone of NRV003. To those unfamiliar with the format of No Real Value, each 12" includes pieces of music by Aggborough, as well as other artists on the edge of underground electronic music, based around a unique set of field recordings sourced by Aggborough himself.
Following on from NRV002's focus on metal detecting, NRV003 focuses much more on location, as well as the local Yorkshire dialect, and wildlife. Aggborough collected the sounds on a recent trip to the Martin Parr exhibition at the Hepworth Wakefield, and at the Yorkshire sculpture park the following day. Ambient sound from the gallery, wildlife in the sculpture park and secret recordings of unwitting rambling society members, contrast with recordings from a contact microphone, capturing the sound of giant metal sculptures reverberating in the wind.
K.I.T.T's Barber Cut Sulphur takes his hardware-live-recording approach, and goes in fast, hard and atmospheric, with spongey, overdriven percussion and polyrhythmic synthesisers used to great effect.
Aggborough contributes two very unique tracks. The Rhubarb Triangle powers forward with a gigantic breakbeat, with ever-evolving, metallic percussion. The track has a raw, roughly edited feel, with huge synth pads coming through in bursts, with 90s rave intensity. Aggborough's second track 'Forced Rhubarb Centre Of The World' is a more grimey number, somehow combining the unintentionally comedic sound of a rambler proudly boasting of the area's forced rhubarb prowess, with an over-driven, filthy drum section. Combining tongue-in-cheek with the genuinely frightening is somehow achieved with this track, and with techno often being such a one-dimensional genre, this track is surely welcome to those willing to break the mould.
Ford Foster also made two tracks, one on the 12" and one available as a digital bonus. Both 'Ramblers' and 'West Bretton Confusion' are fine examples of his signature sound that he has become known for. By using a few core elements, all pushed to the extreme, he manages to build intense, rich sonic textures that would take other producers a super-computer and 50 separate channels to achieve.
